God Or The World, There Is No In Between

With Halloween around the corner, it seems like a good time to share this faithful fragment.

Since diving into faith, my husband and I have decided our family will not be participating in any non-biblical holidays: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas, etc. I have heard many people say things like: “You can just adjust the holiday to be Christ-like.” Or “Just because you celebrate doesn’t make you evil.” Or “You can be a child of God and still participate.”

As much as I would like to believe this, I can’t, because it’s not true.

1 Corinthians 10:20-23

“But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.”

You cannot participate in the things of the world and follow God at the same time.

Now, let me dive in a little deeper about Halloween, specifically.

Halloween is absolutely an evil holiday. Ghouls, goblins, zombies, witches, skeletons, all the creepy crawlies of the night, blood, gore, death… all main parts of the celebration of Halloween. Not to mention, it’s celebrated at night… in literal darkness.

I recently had a conversation about this particular subject. This person said, “But the Bible doesn’t say anything about Halloween.”

This person wasn’t wrong.

But this is what it does say:

Deuteronomy 18:9-12

“When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”

Ephesians 5:11

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

1 Thessalonians 5:22

“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Holidays seem like harmless fun.

The serpent made the fruit seem harmless too.

Genesis 3:1-6

“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”

Don’t be fooled, you’re either walking with God or you’re walking with the Devil.

You can’t do both.

Do you know who you’re following?

If so, do you know how to follow?
